Bob Story's observations about recording From Waltz to War...Bob Story mixing things up...

Another OilPan Studio recording using the Roland 2480HDrecording studio. We had the pre-ampsupdated by Roland and I believe we achieved better sounds overall because of this update.

Microphones used:

  • Rode NTK tube mic - vocals, mandolin
  • Neumann TLM 103 - vocals, drums, acoustic Studio Projects B1, C1, B3 - drums Audio Technica - AT4140
  • (2)-overheads shure 57's-snare

Along with overheads we used a M+S miking system for the drums and realized some nice room sounds that I blended throughout.

Mic Pre's:

  • Grace 101
  • Joe Meek VC6Q
  • ART DIO

Recording:

Here at Oilpan Studios for basics we moved the drummers, Larry Thompson and John Pickering, out of my main studio into another part of the house using an eight channel snake through the wall.  This worked much better than our previous setup of drums being in the same room as the board.

We performed all compositions live with drums, bass, guitar and scratch vocals.

Tony Johnson played bass direct into the board and he used a combination of Fender, Upright Acoustic, and Graphite Bass's. This man is funny and makes me laugh.

The electric guitar ran through a POD XT initially and I eventually recorded up-front guitar parts with a DR Z Maz 18. On "Into The Rain/Stevie", I used Joe Gamble's 60's 4-10 Showman set up in the kitchen a direct mike on the cone and distant mike. Acoustic guitars (Taylor XXX, Martin D-18, 40's Slingerland Acoustic), Tony's Upright, and Chris' mandolin where recorded using the TLM 103.

We recorded piano and the Hammond Organ at Ricardo Pena's studio on a small 4-track digital recorder using the AT 4041's. All of the tracks lined up when I brought them back to my studio except for the piano part for "Spin Doctor". I never did get that one to line up for some reason. The track was stretched and out of sync.

We used the first take of Dennis playing my 40's Slingerland acoustic and singing all into a TLM 103 on “Wild About My Lovin'” with the band. No small feat!

I must say the process of recording has many dips and curves that tend to throw me off the path. It is easy for me to say I am done with some part of the process just because the fatigue of hearing a part over and over. I understand why you let another person master if you mix a recording. Fresh ears! Getting the vocals right was challenging and fun with the studio closet standing in as the booth for Dennis and Grace. Those two where a pleasure to work with and never stopped trying for the best take.

Mixing and Mastering:

Roland Mastering Software on a 2001 HD 24 track recorder Blue Sky Monitor Speakers with sub.

Many songs were taken to Kem Stralka's studio to mix. He has a Pro Tools rig with some nice software and great input paths. Being very helpful, he showed me many cool techniques that I eventually used on the mixes that I did at OilPan Studio. Kem is a drummer, too, and wound up recording a great drum track for "Waltz."  For "All I Ever Wanted", Grace and I tracked live at Kem's studio.

Thanks to all of the musicians that made this music happen. I look forward to the day when I can work with them again.

Bob Story's observations about recording Middle of the Night...

Middle of the Night was recorded on a Roland 2480, a 24-track digital recorder. I was learning how to record during the process and used the combined knowledge at VS Planet, an online recording forum to complete the project. Many thanks go out to the people on the Planet for their ready answers and help.

A Nuemann TLM 103 mic was used into either a Grace 101 preamp or Joe Meek VCQ6 pre for vocals and acoustic instruments. The Grace was also used for clean electric sounds and the Meek was used for its fat and dark nature on many tracks.

All musicians were recorded in the same room that the recorder lived in. (Fortunately, our recording for the From Waltz to War CD went much better mainly because I can now record drums in another room of my house. I can monitor! What a concept.)

I ran a Fender P-Bass through the Grace pre and various electric guitars through a first-generation pod. It took approximately seven months to finish the recording, making time in between gigs, teaching, and family.

I am totally excited about the work we have done on our second CD, From Waltz to War. Songs about love with happy endings still live with songs about the darker side of life. From rolling-down-the-highway broken-hearted songs to commentary on the political state of our world songs, this CD rocks harder with more continuity from begining to end.

After receiving a review on Middle of the Night that stated our music was the equivilant of, "drinking orange juice after tooth paste," we figured we can only go up in stature! The song Middle of the Night has been included on the VS Planet compilation for 2005.
